Help & FAQ

Is there a choice of email name?

You can choose between several different email names:

  • <yourname>@mail.scot
  • <yourname>@blether.scot

Or for Scots overseas or Scots-at-Heart we can offer you:

  • <yourname>@australian.scot
  • <yourname>@canadian.scot
  • <yourname>@european.scot
  • <yourname>@french.scot
  • <yourname>@kiwi.scot
  • <yourname>@american.scot

If you would like a nationality domain that is not listed, please get in touch.

The choice of what you want as <yourname> is up to you so long as it is not illegal, offensive or likely to mislead. If someone else has already registered that name, we’ll let you know so you can choose another.

What do I get?

The standard package includes an email address of your choosing plus calendar, task-list and address book. 1Gb of storage space is standard with each email address.

Who can apply?

Anyone over the age of 18 can apply. We accept applications from all over the world and you don’t have to be Scottish, just a Scot at heart.

How much do they cost?

As an introductory offer, for the first 1,000 customers the first year is on us and there is no charge! Towards the end of your first year, we will contact you to ask if you want to continue using the service and if you do, it will cost £1.00 per month (£12.00 per year) plus VAT if applicable.

What about my privacy?

We at dotScot value privacy very highly and we will not pass on any details about you to anyone else, unless required to do so by law and even then we will only provide the specific information we are obliged to, nothing more. The information we collect will be used solely to provide the email service to you and to help you with any difficulties you may have, e.g. so we can ask you security questions to verify your identity. We are registered with the UK Information Commissioner and comply with GDPR (the General Data Protection Regulations). All your data is kept on our servers in the UK and we don’t send any information about you outside the EU. Full details in our Privacy Policy.

Is it secure?

Our dedicated email servers are all based in the UK and use leading edge software which is maintained to the best industry standards. We go to great lengths to ensure we employ state of the art security measures throughout our systems such as end-to-end encryption. Whitelists, greylists, blacklists, anti-spam and other measures are used to make sure you don’t get bombarded by junk emails.

Will my email address be universally accepted?

Although .scot email addresses are accepted by the vast majority of websites when signing up online for products or services, there are unfortunately some companies which haven’t updated their systems yet to handle new domains including .scot. In those instances you may have to use an alternative email address as a fall-back. If you do come across a company which doesn’t accept a .scot email address, please let us know so we can have a word with them.

What am I not allowed to do?

At all times you must operate your email account in a way that is legal and not likely to cause harm to other users of the service, including us, nor to do anything that would damage the reputation of Scotland. You must not use it for any illegal activity whatsoever. We do not allow use of our email system for spamming, phishing, denial-of-service attacks or any other similar activity. If we detect illegal activity, we will report it to the police or other relevant authority. If you wish to use your address for sending bulk email, you must let us know in advance or you may have your account throttled by the system or terminated in extreme or repeated cases. We have special rates for bulk emailers as that is not included in our standard account.
